DocFilmSA’s docLOVE, SA Guild of Editors and the Imam Haron Foundation invite you to join us for a special screening of DFA member Khalid Shamis ‘ film on the Imam’s life, death and legacy, Imam and I. The post-screening discussion will be with Khalid Shamis (filmmaker and grandson of Imam Haron) Fatiema Haron Masoet (daughter of Imam Haron) and Odette Geldenhuys, (lawyer who supported the re-opening of the inquest), moderated by Haron Gunn-Salie. On Monday the 9th of October 2023 Judge Daniel Thulare gave a landmark ruling on the reopening of the inquest into the death of Imam Abdullah Haron. The official record now stands that the Imam did not die of a heart attack under police custody but was murdered by the security police of the apartheid regime during the course of 4 months of interrogation and torture in Cape Town in 1969. The ruling sets a precedent for other deaths in detention during apartheid to be investigated and reopened in order to uncover truths that many of us already know, or at least strongly suspect.
