NEWSFLASH! GREAT NEWS! HOT OFF THE PRESS! … and any other phrase that will catch your attention!
The DFA is happy to announce that we will be sending our first delegation of documentary filmmakers to attend an international documentary film festival this year. Thanks to the hard work and optimistic persistence of DFA member, Pascal Schmitz, the support of Neiloe Khunyile at the NFVF and the encouragement of Stephanie McArthur at Hot Docs, we can offer our members the chance to attend international film festivals!
Through Pascal’s determination to use the DTI’s EMIA scheme to enable our members to market our films internationally, he learnt to understand the technicalities of their various programmes. Together with the DTI, he was able to use this understanding to slot the DFA and documentary filmmakers into one of the programmes.
Our first delegation in 2012 is made up of 16 South African filmmakers and Neiloe Khunyile from the NFVF.
The DFA would like to continue to offer the opportunity to attend international film festivals to its loyal members. The opportunity exists for those who have supported the DFA with their membership fees for a year prior to the festival in question.
Festivals we hope to send members to in future include Sheffield Doc Fest and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

The collage of images was put together from photos taken by DFA member, David Forbes, at Hot Docs 2011.

Well done and congratulations to the DFA + delegation! Enjoy every moment
pic on left is one of university buildings used for Hot Docs, giving a sense of old worldliness and charm to the festival. The picture on the right is of The Forum, where 26 projects from around the world (chosen from more than 150 submissions this year) will be pitched to a table of funders and commissioning editors. DFA has squeezed it, (having no regard for aspect ratios!) but you can see the originals on my facebook page.
The aspect ration problem was due to an errant bit of code which I have now fixed.
